Conversation Report: Transforming Bhutan’s Economy at Sherubtse College

After conduct of two successive seminars on ‘Transforming Bhutan’s Economy’, Bhutan Centre for Media and Democracy (BCMD) took the seminar to Sherubtse College in Kanglung, Trashigang. The seminar with students and faculty members from two colleges, Sherubtse College and Younphula Centenary College was held on 6 May at the country’s oldest college, Sherubtse College. 

More than 150 students from Sherubtse College and Younphula Centenary College have attended the seminar to talk on the Bhutanese economy. The seminar, which happens only occasionally gave students an open space to express their views on the economic conditions of the country with the speakers. 

At the seminar speakers shared their findings of their specific areas of economy. Dr Tshering C Dorji who works as the CEO of the TechPark Thimphu shared his ideas about how Bhutanese can tap from the IT sector to boost the Bhutanese economy and reduce unemployment in the country. The business correspondent from Kuensel, Tshering Dorji shared on the government’s initiative, Priority Sector Lending, what has worked and what challenges are there to be resolved to improve access to capital for people interested to take up entrepreneurship in the country. Dasho Kinley Dorji spoke on the One-Gewog-One-Product initiative and what challenges remain for the “Brand Bhutan”. The seminar was conducted in partnership with Sherubtse College.
